First Days As A Cyclone, Part 2

We asked First-Year Honors Program students to tell us a little about their first official week as Iowa State students…here’s what they said!

My first week has been absolutely amazing. After I finished sorority recruitment, I got the bid of my choice into Kappa Kappa Gamma. I’ve made so many new friends already that I can’t imagine not hanging out with, and I love the freedom that comes with college, although sometimes it’s scary (laundry by myself…help!) I’ve been going to workout classes such as cycling and Zumba at State Gym as well as Lied! My classes are intimidating but so far I’m looking forward to the semester! And with the first football game this weekend I can’t wait for fall 🙂

My first day of class as an Iowa Stater was great actually! Being from Texas the heat didn’t really bother me, so I took the time to walk to all of my Monday classes and get to know campus a little bit better. Both of my professors seemed really cool, but I was a little surprised to jump right into learning in my Math 265 class. Luckily I have air conditioning so I have slept like a baby! I really like to hide out in the stacks (I think that is what they are called?) in the library because it is super quiet in there and I can attempt to get all my work done in there, except for today when I inadvertently ended up napping there…but nonetheless it is a good place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the campus. I have stopped by Caribou Coffee once this week and have every intention of it becoming a regular stop for me. The pumpkin cake they sell there is one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten! I am excited to just see where my section goes in our Honors seminar. We seem like a cool group of people so it should be a good semester!

Since I was young, I have been looking forward to going to college. In short, Iowa State University did not disappoint. Although I have been on campus for a whole week, it still holds the same excitement as day one. Specifically being apart of FHP has already shown me what my future can bring as well. The structure of the program will not only help me do well while in school but it will prepare me for my future occupation. Although this is all great on paper, the relationships I will build through the program excites me the most. My first week as a Cyclone has been awesome, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year will bring.

School has been great so far! I’ve made it on time to every class and especially enjoyed my first year Honors seminar class. And I see what you mean about my money going to Caribou Coffee…I love stopping in there!

I’ve had a good time in the Honors program so far. While the kick-off competition wasn’t too different from an elementary field day, it was great having the opportunity to meet some wonderful people in an environment that is ultimately academically based. The Alchemist, in addition to inspiring introspection, has set an excellent tone for our college career and beyond. What do we want to do with our life? Is it fate that rules our future or are we in control? Dream on at your own risk- at some point you must act or the hope begins to die in a most toxic manner. I am excited about my time at Iowa State and am grateful to be able to share some of it with my D3 peers and the greater Honors program.

This week has been an absolute blast! I loved the Sunday before classes started because going to the abundant meetings allowed me to meet some of the people who I have courses with.  The FHP Kickoff was a highlight.  The Hickory Park, relay races, and joining of our Honors section helped put me at ease for the first day of class.  So far, my week days have been filled with classes and homework, whereas my week nights have been booked with meetings about clubs, sports, and my new sorority!  Between finding friends, living with three roommates, and balancing academics, there is not a doubt in my mind that Iowa State is the perfect place for me!!
