First Days as a Cyclone, 2015 edition

We asked First-Year Honors Program students to tell us a little about their first official week as Iowa State students…here’s what they said! Here’s what they said in 2014 and 2013, too.

My first week as a Cyclone has definitely been one to remember! I definitely was frustrated as booked it across campus in ten minutes, but one of the highlights of my first day of college was Hon 121! It was the last class of the day and I was exhausted, but my group had so much fun that I totally forgot about all the stress! Whenever we get together, we always have a good time, whether it be about where the best food is or discussing this summer’s book. All in all, I just wanted to let you know that I love being a part of the honors program, and E2 is the best!

So far my first week has been great! My classes have been easier since there are people from Honors and my learning community in almost all of them. I have spent more time in the Sweeney computer lab than my dorm, so I am heavily considering moving my mini fridge there haha. That’s about it really, just a lot of homework, class, and friends in my free time.

My first week was filled with awesome professors, new friends, and LOTS of free food- not to mention the amazing late night bundles at Conversations dining center. It’s great to see how much the faculty works to give us as many opportunities as possible, and it’s clear that they care about our success. I think I could get used to it here.

The Honors kick-off picnic was the best picnic I went to all week! The games were funny, and I love my group! Section H3 is the best!

Go Cyclones! I think one of my favorite spots on campus is right on the ledges next to the entrance of MacKay. Or anywhere nice and quiet, really! It’s been real fun, both the kickoff and the ice cream social were a total blast! I’ve been hoping for the weather to get nicer so I could play some violin out on campus!

My first day of classes felt very stressful, but each day has felt more and more normal. My favorite spot to study is in the basement of Friley. I actually had an unbrella but it broke today, the first time I used it. I happened to meet the same cute guy each time I went to Carver to ask for math help! I’m excited about positively impacting my campus by participating in the Honors seminar HON321U: Campus Rainworks Challenge.

As the first week comes to a close, I can say that becoming a Cyclone was the best choice I could’ve possibly made.  I live on the Honors Living Community in Martin and my suitemates and I have a great time together! We even agreed to continue the tradition into college of the First Day of School picture normally taken by our parents.  It has been great getting to know new people and experiencing a multitude of new things.  I can’t wait to see what else this year has in store for me! If the weather is any sign of the future conditions, I may need to rethink how to transport my study materials seeing as my backpack and all of its contents were beyond soaked from this rain!
