It’s the end of the semester! We asked FHP students how their first semesters were, and we received some great submissions. You might remember some of these students’ thoughts at the beginning of the semester here and here.
Overall, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I came to ISU; there was a lot of things that I wanted to do, such as meet new people, do well in my studies, get involved, etc., but I didn’t know how it would all work out. Thankfully, I was able to get involved in a lot of things that helped me get settled in and have a great first semester: I met and got to know fellow FHP students through the my Honors section (the real H3 all the way!!), made a lot of memories as a member of the ISUCF”V”MB (let’s go saxophones!), developed friendships with the people in my House (Harwoooooood!!), and took a lot of classes that were interesting and really got me motivated for my future career. Sure, I did a lot of work and had some stressful times, but I would say my first semester at Iowa State was a huge success.

Use this if you dare (or want), it’s not my best, but it’s not too bad in my opinion. It’s based on the fresh prince theme if you couldn’t guess (found here: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/djjazzyjeffthefreshprince/freshprinceofbelairthemesong.html). It’s better than anything real I could say…
Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I’ll tell you how I became a student without any despair
In central Iowa I stood amazed
On central campus was where I spent my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool
And all catchin’ some zzzz’s like a massive fool
When a couple of classes were up to no good
Started giving more work than I thought they really could
I got just one bad test grade and my mom got scared
she said ‘I’m taking that comp so you’re not impaired’
I begged and pleaded with her day after day
But she took it and she went on her way
She gave me a kiss and she told me good luck
So I put on some Spotify and said, ‘Let’s kick it’
The Honors building is pretty rad
Scrawling notes on the whiteboard, slowly going mad
Is this what the honors people are like?
Hmmmmmm maybe it’ll be alright.
But wait I heard they’re nerdy, stuck up, all that
Is this the type of place that just accepts this cool cat
I don’t think so
I’ll see throughout this year
I hope they’re prepared for my geeky atmosphere
Well, the year’s almost over, and I’m almost out
There are people sleeping on the floor and the tables, with their textbooks out
I am not trying to fail the test, don’t fret
I just got here
I sprang with the five 5 hour energies I drank, geared
I wait for the CyRide and when it finally came near
It was full of tired students, most filled with fear
If anything I could say this bus was not rare
But I thought ‘Nah, doesn’t matter’ – Okay, let’s end the scare
I got to Kildee with 10 minutes left
And I saw people crying and cramming all over
Got the test and felt the victim
I am finally there
To sit on my throne as the student without any despair

First semester was a bunch of fun! As a marching band member, I got to participate in every game day at Jack Trice, which was majestic despite the sometimes not-so-great outcomes. FHP was so much fun, and having a very competitive group made the Honors Retreat super crazy in a good way! I also got to participate in the Order of the Knoll with some other students in the President’s Leadership Class! Even though I’m going to miss FHP, this semester was great and I can’t wait for the next one!

The FHP program was more work than I anticipated, but great fun! The retreat, my Honors section (L1 is the best, by the way…), the project…Everything was just a total blast! I think my favorite part of the whole semester was probably just the project showcase and seeing all the things that all the sections did! It was just really cool to see all these ideas floating around!
Gotta say though, I kinda regret not bringing my violin to last three weeks! And there’s not a lot of nice, quiet places without people on campus during these last few weeks – every corner I could find already had someone in it.

I have had an amazing first semester and the Honors Program has been such a big part of it! I have loved all the Honor Seminars activities especially the final project. What other class do you get to talk about Taylor Swift? Also, I have loved different movie nights for great causes like watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail while donating to the Heifer Foundation. That was a blast and I can’t forget ice skating. It was my first time on the ice ever and a great memory.
