Ever wonder what Honors students do during the summer? Honors Ambassadors and students will be taking you into their 2016 summer routines via photos. Amanda Fishel is here to educate you about interning at Land O’Lakes (it’s more than just butter!):
Hi, my name is Amanda and this summer I have been interning at Land O’ Lakes in Arden Hills, Minnesota and living in Minneapolis! Yes I am interning for a butter company. But Land O’Lakes does a lot more than dairy food. They also do business in animal feed through Purina Mills and in crop inputs through the seed/crop protection business called Winfield. Enjoy these pictures from my summer!
My typical day starts at 6:25 with a bagel and fruit. Of course I use delicious Honey butter from Land O’Lakes to start the morning. One of the perks of having roommates in Research and Development, is that they bring back all different flavors of butter.
Then, Lauren and I meet at 7:05 in the lobby of our apartment to get to work by 7:30. Don’t let our smiles fool you, we’re usually not this happy but we did it for the picture.
Here is the first thing I see when I enter the building. Over 250 students are interning at Land O’Lakes but only about 80 of those interns work at the corporate buildings. I am an Information Technology intern but some of the other internships include Supply Chain, R&D, Accounting / Finance and more. As an IT intern I am working as a Project Manager and get to work on the Winfield and United Suppliers merger.
This is my wonderful desk area. I hung up pictures from home and from Purina’s marketing campaign, along with my Twins first game certificate to brighten up the cubicle.
Another perk of working at Land O’Lakes is the many taste testing opportunities. Almost every week the Research and Development department asks for employees to try out various butters and cheeses. Not only do you get a free snack but you can also earn gift cards by going to more tastings.
Almost every day after work I go for a run to get some fresh air after working 9 hours inside. The Stone Arch Bridge has been my favorite place to run and is really close by. Plus it leads into miles and miles of trails. It’s awesome seeing so many people out and about running, biking, walking, segwaying etc. I’ve also enjoyed running around the University of Minnesota –Twin Cities Campus, even though it’s not as great as ISU 🙂
On the days I don’t feel like running, my roommate and I will go rollerblading around Minneapolis! We haven’t fallen yet, and we’re hoping to keep it that way.
After my run, I usually make dinner and catch up with my roommates. We love going out onto our deck to enjoy the sunset before going to bed which ends up being a lot earlier than during the school year. Being an adult makes me appreciate my 10 AM classes even more.
Other fun things I’ve got to do this summer include meeting Thomas Rhett at a boot camp, trying various fitness classes like free hot yoga and Orange Theory Fitness, going to art festivals, various concerts, Twins Game, food truck festivals, and I have gotten to know people from all throughout the US because of this internship.
In conclusion, I recommend interning at Land O’Lakes and living or at least visiting Minnesota in the summer. I’ve really enjoyed my time in Minneapolis so far and can’t believe I’m over 2/3 done with my internship. Before I know it, I’ll be packing up to move my stuff to Ames.
