Ever wonder what Honors students do during the summer? Honors Ambassadors and students will be taking you into their 2017 summer routines via photos. Honors senior Amanda Fishel is back in Minneapolis for her second summer internship in a row, now with 100% more Post-It notes:
Hi, my name is Amanda and this summer I have been interning at 3M in Saint Paul, Minnesota and living in Minneapolis! Yes, I have gone from butter and cheese, to post-it notes and tape. Click here to read about my last summer at Land O’Lakes (https://honorslife.wordpress.com/2016/07/19/honors-summer-snapshots-amanda/) I’ve learned a lot about 3M this summer. Like did you know that 3M has been named the most innovative company in the dental industry for the last 10 years? They are definitely more than just post-it notes and command strips. They have more than 50,000 different products! Enjoy these pictures from my summer!
My typical day starts at 6:15 in the morning so that I am into work at 7 AM. This makes an 8 AM class at school seem like sleeping in. As an IT intern, I am doing infrastructure analytics using Power BI to build dashboards and reports.
Here are the 3 other interns I share a conference room with. Just look at how hard Bekah, Brett, and Rebecca are working! There are almost 200 interns at 3M. About 30 of them are Business and Technology interns. Some of the other 3M internships include Supply Chain, R&D, Design, Chemistry, and Engineering.
When I’m not at my desk, I am usually sitting in one of the collaboration spaces. 3M has many of these spaces throughout their campus which provide a nice alternative to working at your desk.
There are so many perks to working at 3M but so far one of my favorites are the great discounts. 3M had a $30 all-you-can-stuff bag and as a college kid who goes through so many command products and tape, I made sure to get my money’s worth.
Almost every day after work I go for a run. It’s always nice getting fresh air after working inside all day. Plus, running helps me get my steps in 😉 I love finding new trails around Minneapolis and enjoy running along the Mississippi River and on the University of Minnesota campus, the 2nd prettiest campus, next to ISU of course.
After my run, I usually make dinner and catch up with my roommates: Sara, Kate, and Shirley. Here is a picture of us with our friend Dane at the Stone Arch Bridge Festival. We are all interning in different departments of 3M and come from a variety of schools including University of St. Andrews in Scotland, University of Urbana-Illinois, and ArtCenter College of Design in LA.
Other fun things I’ve done this summer include going to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, Walker Art Center, Surly Brewery tour, Lake Calhoun, rooftop restaurants, baseball games, and trying out as many new foods as I can.
In conclusion, I recommend visiting Minneapolis in the summer and learning more about what 3M does. P.s. let me know if you want any 3M products!
